Merino Classic 2011

Merino Classic 2011

The Merino Classic 2011 that will be presented during Agri Mega Week in Bredasdorp, promises, once again, to be an amazing Merino event. Merino breeders and enthusiasts, from all over, are expected at this annual prestigious event. Organisers are already hard at work with the preparations for the huge turnout of both Merino sheep and guests, which are expected. The sponsors for this year’s Merino Classic are BKB and ABSA.

The program for 2011’s Merino Classic includes, among others, the Merino SA Annual General Meeting, as well as a board meeting, where prominent role players in Merino circles will be discussing this wool breed’s activities of the past year, and contemplations about the future thereof.

Wednesday 14 September, launches the Merino school program for local pupils that are attending Agri Mega Week 2011 after which the Merino Classic will be officially opened. The show proceedings will commence on Thursday the 15th and Friday the 16th in the BKB Livestock Centre. Albie Muller, a prominent figure among Merino members, will be the golden voice of the Merino Classic and will be acting as master of ceremonies for the duration of the event. Scheduled photo sessions for category winners will be organised so as to provide adequate recognition for the participants and their achievements.

The Merino Classic provides some insight into the selection process, or at least, the practises that are implemented by Merino breeders. The various competitions that will take place during the “Classic” range from subjective adjudication, to those where an outright economic production achievement is considered for participating herds.

The fleece competition includes the measurement of economically important characteristics, and is supported with much enthusiasm. Robert Scott is the man behind the Merino fleece competition and is already hard at work sourcing fleeces for the competition.

For the consumer the unique characteristics of Merino wool, such as its elasticity, softness, absorption, durability, and stain resistance, will be placed in the limelight with the “Farm to Fashion” presentation that is scheduled for the 15th and 16th. Beautiful garments, produced from Merino wool will be displayed. Thought it was just for those who exchange knitting patterns? Think again! Leaders in the fashion industry like Giorgio Armani, Louis Vuitton and Prada, are known for their love of Merino garments (feel free to visit www.merino.com for a few examples).

Visitors and participants alike at the Merino Classic 2011 can also look forward to a variety of activities, exhibitions, demonstrations, and much much more at Agri Mega Week 2011.
